| Everything was as it should be for round one: a poorly
prepared pitch, a ground better suited for football
than cricket, threatening weather and a team of mighty,
aged warriors exhibiting the condition that only a comprehensive
pre-season programme can provide.
This is our year Barnies!
I won the toss and elected to bowl on a wicket unlikely
to get better with time. I threw the ball to Den for
a ceremonial first over. Still life in the old boy.
Some classic Barnie fielding, sharp chances, wides and
excellent glove-work and we had them on the ropes at
0/85 after about a dozen overs. Relief finally came
in the form of a (alleged) Scotsman. Castle knocked
over, opening batsman on his way back to the pavilion.
We were right back in this.
Overs from Hags, Deano, Todders and Jars for little
result. A highlight however, was Tony McCallum telling
Hyndo to not let the carting of his first over ‘destroy
his confidence’, only to clean bowl him in the
next one. Stick that up your arse. In a moment of inspired
captaincy, Big Hucca brought himself on to bowl. Three
wickets in quick succession, 35 overs down and we managed
to keep thm to a meagre 195.
Jamie & Kirschy opened the batting. Bats flailing,
boundaries scored until disaster struck. Kirsch on his
way back to the pavilion with the score on 27. Graham
15, Extras 11, Kirsch 1. A quick-fire 7 from Todders,
Singles to Hucca and Deano, Hucca blaming the lack of
gas for the BBQ for his lack of runs and we were 5/51.
Time for a captain’s knock! I departed 3 runs
later with the score on 59.
Were it not for Jars – 46 not out & Terns
38 the score may have looked shabbier than it was. The
result: all out for 173. Nearly got there. Barnies at
0 from 1. All is as it should be. |
